‘Fetish’ is an extremely unhelpful word. It is not a neutral, scientific word, but a term that comes loaded with baggage, and to most people is a synonym of ‘perversion.’ Therefore, even if it was technically correct to say that femephilia is a fetish I would eliminate the term from any dialogue around femephilia. However, while we’re on the subject, I don’t believe autogynephilia* is a fetish because, again, femephiliac sexual behaviour is too complex to label in one pen stroke. Watching this video confirms why embracing autogynephilia can never be a good idea. If you already have problems related to passing and familial acceptance, it’s surely madness to start broadcasting to the world that your womanhood comes from autogynephilia. “What’s autogynephilia?” they will say, and even if you try to dress it up in flowery language like Rya “the love of oneself as a woman” they will soon go online and read that it is… ‘a paraphilia.’ There are far more neutral and scientific ways of talking about the link between sexuality and gender than Blanchard’s. Conclusion There are various transphobic groups that will always obsess over the minutiae of transgender fantasy… looking for differences between them and the fantasies of a ‘real woman’. And guess what… they’ll find them… because they exist. Far from indicating  anomaly and invalidation, however, such differences are to be expected. Our sexual experiences have to pass through a mass of male neurology, anatomy and endocrinology, as well as socialisation as a male (that included being told that dressing and behaving like a girl was not correct)… is it any wonder that the resulting sexuality is different? However, putting aside specific fantasies of pre-transition sexuality, there is a wider feeling that the existence of any type of sexual arousal with respect to being a woman invalidates a claim to be transgender.
